Chilling with Mary Matalin

We entered an Alexandria townhouse with expensive Victorian furniture everywhere and her assistant assured us she’d be there soon. As we set up, I wondered about her huge influence in the GOP and how it traced back to Lee Atwater. Mary was an aide to Lee in the ‘88 Presidential election and later his chief of staff. In the edit room, sometimes I notice her in the background of a shot of Lee I’ve seen a hundred times. She was there, back in the day, learning from the master, honing the media & strategy skills that later got her a gig with Dick Cheney in the White House.

In the interview, I fired questions at her for hours - it definitely wasn’t one of the 10-minute CNN stand-ups she’s used to. She had a lot to say, especially about how she feels Lee was willfully misrepresented by the liberal media - no surprise there! (She emailed me later to ask if I interviewed everyone as long as I did her. The answer was no - some of them even longer…)
